Mattie's Diner: Serving up gigantic classics at the NC Music Factory

Mattie’s Diner is a classic 24-hour eatery that opened in the NC Music Factory entertainment district in Uptown Charlotte in August of 2010. Even though the restaurant is brand new for Charlotte, the actual dining car was manufactured in 1948 and was relocated several times throughout the state of New Jersey before bringing the car to the Queen City.
The location for Mattie’s Diner is perfect for the after-hours crowd who will hit the restaurant after they leave the clubs, music venues and bars at the NC Music Factory.
The NC Music Factory is an entertainment district approximately two miles northwest of the heart of Uptown, but still within the I-277 perimeter. The NC Music Factory is an all-in-one mixed-use development that currently features two music venues — one outside, the Road Runner Mobile Amphitheater; and one inside, The Fillmore — as well as two dance clubs, several saloons and a couple of restaurants. The NC Music Factory also has office and band rehearsal spaces for lease and will eventually have a residential complex nearby.
Mattie’s Diner serves breakfast during all hours of operation, and for $4 to $6, the short-order cooks behind the grill will not leave any stomach empty. Some of the popular breakfast items on the menu include flapjacks with blueberry, pecan, chocolate chips, peanut butter or banana filling; “The Junkyard,” home fries, eggs, meat, chili, cheese, onions and salsa; or a three-egg omelet like the “Shepard’s Omelet,” which is filled with pot roast and potatoes.
Mattie’s Diner also serves up a dozen different types of burgers for $6 to $7 with a side of fries, including the “Mattie Melt,” and “Reuben’s Burger” — a burger with Swiss cheese, pastrami, slaw and Russian dressing. The diner serves 14-different sandwiches for $5 to $7 including the “Fat Wrap,” which is a pita filled with chicken fingers, fried mozzarella sticks, onion rings, French fries and marinara sauce.
There are also 20 different flavors of milkshakes for $3.79, along with several entrees like meatloaf, pot roast and chicken fried chicken for $7 to $9.
HelloCharlotte Tip: Although Mattie’s Diner is marketed as a 24-hour diner, the restaurant is actually only open 24 hours on Thursdays through Sundays. Mattie’s is open for lunch on Mondays from 11 am to 3 pm, and is open from 9 am to 9 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Mattie's has an active web site, but there's not yet much on it except for the menu. Check out the diner's Facebook page for additional information.
