The String Bean Fresh Market & Deli: High quality food and drinks in Historic Downtown Belmont
Jun 10, 2010
The String Bean Fresh Market & Deli is providing a niche service to residents in and near Historic Belmont by combining a market with fresh local produce, meats, cheeses, wine and beer with a restaurant helmed by a local culinary instructor.
Chad Hutcheson, who teaches culinary students at Charlotte’s Johnson & Wales University, opened The String Bean in 2009 and the concept has certainly taken off. The menu is chocked full of homemade southern-style appetizers, sandwiches and burgers with an expert culinary twist.
Instead of a typical BLT, The String Bean serves up a BLFT, as in Bacon, Lettuce, and Fried (Green) Tomatoes. The restaurant’s Cuban sandwich is made with smoked pulled pork, and they serve a flatbread pizza with Pimento cheese and chorizo sausage.
The String Bean Fresh Market & Deli also serves up one of the largest beer and wine menus in all of North Carolina with more than 400 wines and 150 beers in stock. Diners can also purchase wine or beer right off the shelf to either take home or drink with their meal. The String Bean also allows you to purchase single bottles as well as a mix-and-match six-pack of whatever is on the shelf — which usually includes a lot of high gravity Stouts and India Pale Ales.
Make sure to save room for a String Bean specialty dessert, including Fried Oreos — which usually can only be found at carnivals and state fairs. The String Bean classes up the dish by dipping the six chocolate cookies in dough, frying them, covering them with powdered sugar and caramel and positioning homemade vanilla ice cream in the middle. You will remember this dessert.
Appetizers run $6.50 to $9.50; individual flatbread pizzas are $8 to $9.50; sandwiches, salads and burgers run $6 to $10.
HelloCharlotte Tip: The String Bean Fresh Market & Deli is closed on Sundays and Mondays, as well as from 2 pm to 5:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday before serving dinner until 9 pm.
