Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden: One of the nation's must-visit gardens
Jul 8, 2010
Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful areas of the Charlotte region, and thousands of residents and tourists visit the grounds every year to participate in one of the manyf events it holds. Whether it’s attending a wedding, an educational field trip, or taking in the natural gorgeousness of the botanical gardens themselves, everyone should take at least one visit to this area landmark.
The Garden sits on nearly 400 acres and was founded by local textile executive Daniel J. Stowe. The site was once home to several Native American tribes who found the region perfect for hunting, fishing and trapping. In 1999, the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden was officially opened to the public. The Garden was named by cable channel HGTV as one of the nation’s 20 Great Gardens and was considered one the top 10 places in the United States to “welcome fall with a flourish” by USA Today.
The garden is filled with hundreds of different types of flowers and plants, along with a dozen fountains throughout the complex. The garden also has a year-round indoor Orchard Conservatory, a rose garden, an Asian garden and a children’s garden.
Speaking of children, the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden offers up an educational program that many local schools and summer camps take advantage of. The tours and workshops focus on horticulture and the science of conservation.
The garden also is a very popular place for photographers and artists. Not only does it welcome artists into the facility, but also presents regular workshops and contests in photography, woodworking, painting and other media.
Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors older than 60 and $6 for children 4 to 12. It is free for kids under the age of 4. The garden is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
HelloCharlotte Tip: The garden may be rented for corporate gatherings, birthday parties and weddings. It is one of the most popular places in the Charlotte region for weddings, so make sure to contact the Garden very early in order to book a wedding or reception.
