William R. Davie Park: Popular for man and man's best friend
Mar 26, 2010
Public parks in Charlotte vary in size and features, but each of them has its own charm and appeal. The 106-acre William R. Davie Park, 4635 Pineville-Mathews Road, brings in hundreds of residents each week to use its basketball courts, soccer fields and playground, but the biggest draw is the five-acre dog park.
The biggest dog park in all of Charlotte Mecklenberg’s public parks, Davie Park is popular for all dog owners because it is actually two parks that allow for separation of large and small breeds. For dogs 20 pounds and lighter, a smaller rectangular area allows Toy Poodles, Chihuahuas, and Terriers to mingle away from the barks of the big dogs. For large breeds weighing in at more than 20 pounds, the park opens up into four connected areas filled with benches, water buckets and easily accessible trashcans for the disposal of doggie doo-doo.
The very clean and friendly park is a canine paradise where dozens of dogs run off-leash from dawn until dusk. The county does not allow children under the age of 12 and puppies younger than four months old. Dogs must be licensed and vaccinated for rabies and DHLPP, and tags must be worn at all times.
For Charlotte residents and visitors without dogs, Davie Park also features a popular sand volleyball court, walking trails and a large playground. The park also has four softball fields and two soccer fields surfaced with artificial grass that look and feel just like the real thing.
Davie Park has an indoor shelter available for rent by Charlotte residents with electricity, air conditioning, heating and a kitchen with a stove. Cost is $241 on a weekday or $480 on a weekend or holiday, with each additional hour costing $94.
HelloCharlotte Tip: A new entrance/exit to the large breed dog park was recently opened on the southwestern side of the park. This allows owners to access their favorite part of the fenced-in area easier than in the past.
