Carolinas Aviation Museum: Flying High into History
Across the street from the Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the Carolinas Aviation Museum; a place where visitors young and old can come to take in the history of flight and aircraft.
Climb into the cockpit of an F-4 fighter jet or a Boeing B-29 Bomber plane and take in the view as the pilots do as you watch the enormous jets take off overhead from the airport. Watch the younsters' eyes light up with delight as they experience the magic of flight, whether it be for the first time or the tenth.
Nearly 50 planes are part of the Carolinas Aviation Museum collection, and that number is steadily growing. Opened just twelve years ago, the museum is now a must-visit destination for both tourists and locals alike.
A reproduction of the Wright Brothers' glider is on display alongside favorites like the Long/Schweizer 1948 Midget Mustang, a McConnell-Douglas Harrier jet, a Boeing PT-17 from World War II, and a Grumman F-14 fighter jet, among dozens of other unique aircraft. Several military helicopters are also on display.
The Carolinas Aviation Museum is open to all ages, but those with groups of more than five children are asked to call ahead to make reservations.
